The state of New Jersey covers bias-motivated violence and intimidation, civil

action against race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, and

disability. There is also institutional vandalism, data collection, and training for

law enforcement personnel for hate crimes.

New Jersey defines hate crimes as when someone attempts to commit,

conspires with another to commit, or threatens the immediate commission of an

offense to intimidate an individual or group of individuals because of race,

color, religion, gender, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or

expression, national origin, or ethnicity. It also covers if anyone or group of

people were to feel intimidated or if they feel that a crime was committed

because of any of the options listed in the previous sentence. Institutional

vandalism is another form of hate crimes in the sense that you can be charged

for vandalizing any public monument, insignia, symbol, or structure, or place of

worship or burial.

In Sayreville, New Jersey there was a hate crime assault that involved two white supremacists from the group known as the Aryan Terror Brigade. After a New Year's Eve meet-and-greet during a white supremacist event, the two gentlemen drove off to a random apartment complex with the intention of assaulting any non-whites. The crime committed was towards three middle eastern men as they were injured by a knife, brass knuckles and were shouted with anti-Arab slurs. The hate crime is punishable by a maximum of ten years in prison and both men face a $250,000 fine.
